Structural discontinuity in the hexagonalRTAlcompounds: Experiments and density-functional theory calculations

Abstract: An anomalous behavior of the lattice parameters is reported for RTAl and R͑T , TЈ͒Al compounds, with R a rare-earth element and T and TЈ transition metals or Cu. In these compounds, which crystallize in the hexagonal ZrNiAl-type of structure, an abrupt transition in the temperature or composition dependence of the lattice constants a and c is observed with the common feature that values of the c / a ratio around 0.565-0.575 are generally not realized. Total-energy calculations based on density-functional theor… Show more

“…The weak antiferromagnetic reflections and the low quality of this sample, that was caused probably by vicinity of the structural transition and possible existence of two different crystal phases at low temperature in this compound (different a, c parameters due to forbidden c/a ratio; see e.g. [8,14]), prevented us from determining the magnetic structure in more detail. Therefore only the information about the AF order without any other detail of magnetic structure is given in Table 2.…”

“…TbNiAl shows an abrupt transition in the lattice parameters around 110 K (while the space group is conserved), which is accompanied by sudden change in the resistivity [36,37]. Application of hydrostatic pressure on TbNiAl lowers the structural transition temperature, which vanishes completely for pressures ≽0.55 GPa [37].…”

“…However, an increase of magnetic moment is observed neither for DyPdAl nor for HoPdAl, indicating that Pd is non-magnetic and does not contribute to the density of states at the Fermi level [21]. The RPdAl compounds exhibit complex magnetic structures and possess different magnetic-phase transitions at low temperatures [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25], which induce interesting magnetocaloric properties [26,27]. In this paper, we report on the magnetic properties and the MCEs of HoPdAl compound.…”
