Structural diversity in bishydroxylamine complexes of gallium

Abstract: Reactions of bishydroxylamines of the type HON(R)CH2CH2N(R)OH (R=Me, tBu) with trimethyl- and triisopropylgallium gave bicyclic metalla cages of the formula R'2GaO(R)NCH2CH2N(R)OGaR'2 [R'=Me, R=Me (), tBu (); R'=iPr, R=Me (), tBu ()] with six-membered Ga2O2N2-rings. While the complexes show the same core constitution in the solid state, NMR spectra reveal the steric influence of the isopropyl substituent of the compounds / on its behaviour in solution. The reaction of the sterically more demanding substituted … Show more

“…As representative examples, the Ga-O bond length in the (Me 2 GaONMe 2 ) 2 complex is 1.886(2) Å and the N-O distance was 1.435(3) Å [28] while the analogous distances in the GaH 2 (quinuclidine)(TEMPO) (TEMPO = tetramethylpiperidinyloxide) complex are 1.850(5) and 1.447(8) Å, respectively [29]. Finally, the series of bis(hydroxylamine) gallium complexes prepared by the Mitzel group have an average Ga-O distance of 1.91 Å and average N-O distance of 1.44 Å [30,31]. In all cases, the N-O bond distance in these complexes are longer than that observed for 1 (1.397(3) Å).…”

“…The cationic charge is balanced by the anions [NdCp 3 Cl] − and [YCp 2 Cl 2 ], respectively. The cations are octa-coordinate by two N-O functions and four pyridyl nitrogen atoms in both cases.…”

“…The structure of the anion in compound 1 [NdCp 3 Cl] − has been previously reported in the case of the praseodymium salt [Na(phen) 4 ][PrCp 3 Cl] [10]. The [YCp 2 Cl 2 ] − anion in yttrium salt 2 is so far unknown, but Cp* [11,12] and [C 5 H 3 (SiMe 3 ) 2 ] [13] derivatives have earlier been reported for the elements ytterbium and erbium.…”

“…Recently, we have shown that it is possible to prepare a compound with such hydroxylamine N-OH and gallium alkyl functions within the same molecule. 4 Moreover, this compound features different bis-hydroxylamine units in the same aggregates, namely a doubly deprotonated one and one which still bears its two protons, but the latter one-again asymmetric-has two remaining protons, one in an OH function, the other in a tautomeric aminoxide R 2 N(O)H form (Scheme 1).…”
