Transmedia storytelling has been widely researched as a new topic in the last decade. The transmedia field includes many publications exploring the topic from different perspectives, but it lacks a standard methodology that allows the measurement of different case studies under a unified pattern. This research suggests a model for transmedia ecosystems that will allow researchers to study them in-depth. Authors suggest a potential configuration based on a simplified image of the transmedia universe, in which projects are divided into well-differentiated narrative systems, allowing the obtention of precise details on their basic functioning. This paper provides an original methodology able to observe the transmedia universes from different perspectives. To test the validity of the paradigm, the model has applied to the case study of the Spanish-fiction product, The Ministry of Time (El Ministerio del Tiempo, in the original language), because of the multiplicity of content renders its study as highly efficient. Thus, we encounter a new transmedia universe that allows precise measurement and the obtention of conclusive data. The positive results confirm that the new methodological approach meets the initial expectations. At the same time, it offers the possibility of obtaining much more information than the one the limited space of this article allows to explain, which opens the door to new lines of research in the future.

Understanding Transmedia Music on YouTube through Disney Storytelling

Transmedia storytelling has been integrated into contemporary society through social media, where influencers have enabled the building of worlds. Within this environment of human-interaction, fiction and converging social realities have become an essential tool to tell stories. On YouTube, storytelling has expanded to music, where cover videos take on great relevance. The aim of this study is to understand the transmedia music phenomenon due to the impact of music on the platform. To this end, we applied a methodology that stemmed from Grounded Theory principles in the analysis of 300 Disney animation song covers in three stages: (1) deductive and inductive codebook development; (2) social network analysis; and (3) statistical test. The results showed that youtubers highlight specific audiovisual codes from the film and cultural industries. Furthermore, we observed these productions often display configurations that expand the original story through performance, location, costumes, make-up, among others. We argue that, on the digital sphere, a sustainable transmedia music paradigm is developing, where performers construct more meaningful and valuable stories.

Purpose of the study: The objective of this study was to look into the opportunities of using the transmedia technologies in art education, in particular in music teachers’ professional training, and to introduce the results of the online survey “Transmedia Technology in Art Education” that was carried out in Ukraine among both teachers’ and university students’ for investigating their mastery of transmedia technology. Methodology: This study was based on the online survey “Transmedia Technology in Art Education”. The survey was developed on the Google Forms platform and included 20 questions, divided into three blocks. To conduct the study, 40 students of State Higher Education Institution “Donbas State Pedagogical University” (Ukraine) and Communal Institution “Pokrovsk Pedagogical College” (Ukraine) and 31 university lecturers and secondary school teachers took part in the survey. Main Findings: The received data and their analysis show that the concept of transmedia technology and its essence is new and unknown for both students and teachers. The survey confirms that all survey participants are active ICT users who prefer searching for and sharing information on the Internet, using electronic guides and textbooks, and creating multimedia products. Fewer respondents prefer active methods of using ICT, such as an online stream, seminars, e-journals, learning materials with QR codes. It was found that the knowledge about ICT and skills to use it is the basis for mastering the transmedia technology and implementing it in music teachers’ professional training. Applications of this study: This study can be used by secondary school administrative staff to investigate the teachers’ mastery of transmedia technology, as well as by university teachers for implementing the transmedia strategy in music teachers’ professional training that contributes to the qualitative development of their professional competence. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of the study lies in the attempt to investigate the level of music teachers’ mastery of transmedia technology and its potential opportunities for developing music teachers’ professional competence as there is no experience of using transmedia technology in the sphere of music teacher training.
