The progress of membrane technology with the development of membranes with controlled parameters led to porous membranes. These membranes can be formed using different methods and have numerous applications in science and technology. Anodization of aluminum in this aspect is an electro-synthetic process that changes the surface of the metal through oxidation to deliver an anodic oxide layer. This process results in a self-coordinated, exceptional cluster of round and hollow formed pores with controllable pore widths, periodicity, and thickness. Categorization in barrier type and porous type films, and different methods for the preparation of membranes, have been discussed. After the initial introduction, the paper proceeds with a brief overview of anodizing process. That engages anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) layers to be used as formats in various nanotechnology applications without the necessity for expensive lithographical systems. This review article surveys the current status of the investigation on AAO membranes. A comprehensive analysis is performed on AAO membranes in applications; filtration, sensors, drug delivery, template-assisted growth of various nanostructures. Their multiple usages in nanotechnology have also been discussed to gather nanomaterials and devices or unite them into specific applications, such as nano-electronic gadgets, channel layers, and clinical platforms tissue designing. From this review, the fact that the specified enhancement of properties of AAO can be done by varying geometric parameters of AAO has been highlighted. No review paper focused on a detailed discussion of multiple applications of AAO with prospects and challenges. Also, it is a challenge for the research community to compare results reported in the literature. This paper provides tables for easy comparison of reported applications with membrane parameters. This review paper represents the formation, properties, applications with objective consideration of the prospects and challenges of AAO applications. The prospects may appeal to researchers to promote the development of unique membranes with functionalization and controlled geometric parameters and check the feasibility of the AAO membranes in nanotechnology and devices.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based filter with microchannels enables the removal of various microorganisms, including viruses and bacteria, from fluids. Membranes with porous channels can be used as filtration interfaces in MEMS hemofilters or mini-dialyzers. The main problems associated with the filtration process are optimization of membrane geometry and fouling. A nanoporous aluminum oxide membrane was fabricated using an optimized two-step anodization process. Computational strength modeling and analysis of the membrane with specified parameters were performed using the ANSYS structural module. A fuzzy simulation was performed for the numerical analysis of flux through the membrane. The membrane was then incorporated with the prototype for successive filtration. The fluid flux and permeation analysis of the filtration process have been studied. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs of membranes have been obtained before and after the filtration cycles. The SEM results indicate membrane fouling after multiple cycles, and thus the flux is affected. This type of fabricated membrane and setup are suitable for the separation and purification of various fluids. However, after several filtration cycles, the membrane was degraded. It requires a prolonged chemical cleaning. High-density water has been used for filtration purposes, so this MEMS-based filter can also be used as a mini-dialyzer and hemofilter in various applications for filtration. Such a demonstration also opens up a new strategy for maximizing filtration efficiency and reducing energy costs for the filtration process by using a layered membrane setup.

Renal failure is one of the leading health issue in the world that effects people worldwide. Number of chronic renal failure patients are increasing day by day due to different factors. Hemodialysis is the most easily approachable treatment for renal failure patient. Efficiency of this treatment mainly depend upon semipermeable membrane used in hemodialyzer. Currently Synthetic polysulfone membrane is considered as a dialyzing membrane on commercial scale, which have irregular geometry such as pore size and pore shape responsible for the low toxin removal efficiency. A novel anodic aluminum oxide membrane (AAO) with highly ordered structure, perfect chemical stability and high thermal resistance is an attractive approach as dialyzing membrane. In this research commercially available polysulfone membrane and lab prepared highly ordered anodic aluminum oxide membrane were used to fabricated a mini dialyzer in lab to study different factors that effects the blood flow during the process of dialysis. Blood of 10 renal failure patients were used to conduct the process of dialysis in both mini dialyzers at lab scale. Toxin removal efficiency of both dialyzers were checked and compared with each other. Result showed that overall toxin removal efficiency of AAO base mini dialyzer was better than polysulfone membrane base mini dialyzer. However toxin removal efficiency for polysulfone base dialyzer remain same, while in AAO base dialyzer efficiency dropped with time. Results of this comparative study will be helpful to obtain a dialyzer that can provide maximum toxin removal efficiency to improve the process of dialysis to treat renal failure patients.
