Structure-activity relationship of Schiff base derivatives of bis(aminophenyl)disulfide and p-vanillin as antimicrobial agents

Abstract: A series of Schiff bases (1-9) were assayed for antibacterial (S. aureus, E. faecalis P. aeruginosa) and antifungal (C. albicans and A. niger) activities using disc diffusion method. Among the compounds tested [bis(p-methoxybenzaldimino)phenyldisulfide], 5 showed the most favourable antibacterial and [o,o'-(N,Ndipicolinyldene)diazadiphenyldisulfide], 6 antifungal activities with MICs of 1 mg/mL and 0.025 mg/mL against S. aureus and C. albicans respectively.

“…Compound L 1 was showed good antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus as compared to standard antibiotics CTX30 and AMC30. L 1 and L 2 compounds were similar affected against Candida tropicalis and C. albi- (4). A similar study, in vitro biological screening of the synthesized Schiff-bases has been carried out against the phyto pathogenic bacteria (Azotobacter and Rhizobium) and fungi (Aspergillus niger and Fusarium oxysporium).…”

“…The Super Bug (multidrug resistant organisms) poses a significant threat to global health. Schiff bases bearing sulphur, aryl or heterocyclic groups having nitrogen are known to possess biological activities (4).Recent studies have focused on the biological, especially antitumor (5-7), antibacterial (8,9), antifungal, anti-HIV (10) properties of disulphide-Schiff bases. In vitro biological screenings of the synthesized ligands were carried out against the human pathogens.…”

“…e high antimicrobial activity of the [(AMMP) 2 (DHBQ)] complex can be attributed to the presence of both pyrimidine and p-benzoquinone rings, which are known for their biological activities [55,56]. Furthermore, it has been reported in the literature that heterocyclic compounds with electron-donating methoxy group substituents at the para position of the aromatic rings exhibit excellent antimicrobial activity [57][58][59].…”
