Structure and 3/7-like Magnetization Plateau of Layered Y2Cu7(TeO3)6Cl6(OH)2 Containing Diamond Chains and Trimers

Abstract: We have synthesized a new spin-1/2 antiferromagnet, Y2Cu7(TeO3)6Cl6(OH)2, via a traditional hydrothermal method. This compound crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system with space group P1̅. The magnetic ions constitute a two-dimensional layered lattice with a novel topological structure in which the Cu4 clusters make up distorted diamond chains along the a axis and these chains are connected by the Cu3 trimers. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements show that the compound is antiferroma… Show more

“…This system possesses a layered lattice where Cu4 clusters constitute the diamond chains connected by Cu3 trimers. 22 It exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering at T N = 4.1 K and evidences a ferrimagnetic ground state. It has been argued that the occurrence of a plateau can have either quantum or classical origin.…”

“…Both spin-frustrated and non-spin-frustrated magnetic materials exhibit magnetization plateaus, and a given magnetic compound may exhibit more than one magnetic plateau. Examples with a single magnetization plateau include a 1/3-plateau for Cu 3 V 2 O 7 (OH) 2 , 4 ZnCu 3 (OH) 6 Cl 2 , 5 (CuBr)Sr 2 Nb 3 O 10 6 and Cs 2 CuBr 4 , 7 a 3/7-plateau for Na 2 Cu 7 (SeO 3 ) 4 O 2 Cl 4 , 8 Y 2 Cu 7 (TeO 3 ) 6 Cl 6 (OH) 2 9 and Pb 2 Cu 10 O 4 (SeO 3 ) 4 Cl 7 , 10 a 1/5-plateau for Cu 5 (VO 4 ) 2 (OH) 4 11 and a 3/5-plateau for Na 2 Cu 5 (Si 2 O 7 ) 2 . 12 Examples exhibiting multiple magnetic plateaus include 1/4- and 3/4-plateaus for NH 4 CuCl 3 13 as well as 1/9-, 1/4-, 1/3-, 2/5- and 1/2 plateaus for SrCu 2 (BO 3 ) 2 .…”
