Structure and a 1/2-Like Magnetization Plateau in a Seff = 1/2 Skew Chain Compound [Co2(CH3O-ip)(COOH)2(H2O)]n

Abstract: ] n is successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction method. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic structure with space group P2 1 /c, in which two inequivalent Co ions, bridged by a μ 2 -O monodentate formic acid ligand group, form one-dimensional skew chains along the b axis. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data indicate that the compound undergoes two magnetic phase transitions at T N1 = 5.8 K and T N2 = 6.6 K, respectively. Interestingly, the magnetization curve at 2 K presents … Show more

“…Figure b shows the ZFC and FC curves measured from 2 to 40 K under different magnetic fields for compound 4 . As the applied field increased, the AFM ordering at 5.7 K was suppressed above 3 T, similar to that observed in the compound Mn 3 (SeO 3 ) 3 H 2 O. ,,, Moreover, in order to confirm the occurrence of the AFM LRO of 4 , the temperature-dependence ESR measurement was conducted. As shown in Figure b, similar to 3 , a single paramagnetic peak at 40 K persisting down to 10 K changes into multiple peaks at 2 K, confirming the LRO state of 4 at 2 K. However, the long-range order in 3 may still need to be further confirmed by other techniques later including neutron diffraction.…”

“…For example, the spin-Peierls transition is observed in CuGeO 3 and NaV 2 O 5 with S = 1/2. , While the screw chain compounds ACo 2 V 2 O 8 (A = Ba, Sr, Pb) with S = 3/2 exhibit various exotic phenomena with spinon confinement, topological excitations, and Bethe strings. In addition, a nearly ideal 1D chain compound FeF 3 (4,4′-bpy) (4,4′-bpy = 4,4′-bipyridyl) with S = 5/2 shows strong interactions within spin chain, and Fe 2 (TeO 3 ) 2 (SO 4 )·3H 2 O with S = 5/2 exhibits spin-flop transition . Moreover, several compounds with 1D spin chain structures including Cu 3 (CO 3 ) 2 (OH) 2 ( S = 1/2), BiCu 2 PO 6 ( S = 1/2), Sr 3 NiIrO 6 ( S = 1), CaNi 3 P 4 O 14 ( S = 1), Co 3 (BPO 4 ) 2 (PO 4 )(OH) 3 ( S = 3/2), CaCo 2 O 6 ( S = 3/2), Co 2 (CH 3 O-ip)(COOH) 2 (H 2 O) ( S = 3/2), and SrMn 3 P 4 O 14 ( S = 5/2) show a step-like magnetization plateau curve. However, these experimental systems are independent of different crystal structures.…”

“…19,20 The short magnetic bridging ligands such as carboxylate, pyrazole, azide, and cyanide are excellent candidates for constructing magnetic materials. [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] They can effectively transmit magnetic interactions between neighboring paramagnetic centers. In addition, the Cu-L-Cu angle (L = bridging atom), Cu-L-L-Cu torsion angle, and dihedral angle (g) between the coordination planes of Cu(II) centers can affect the sign and magnitude of exchange interactions.…”
