Poly(lactic acid)/amidated benzoic acid intercalated layered double hydroxides (PLA/AB‐LDH) nanocomposites were synthesized by reactive extrusion process using zinc acetate, L‐lactide, and AB‐LDH, in which the zinc acetate was severed as catalyst, L‐lactide as raw material and AB‐LDH as nucleating agent. The prepared PLA/AB‐LDH nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and so on. The test results showed that PLA/AB‐LDH nanocomposites had α‐crystal structure. The analysis results of mechanical test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and polarized optical microscopy (POM) demonstrated that the toughness, crystallinity, crystallization rate, and nucleation density of PLA/AB‐LDH nanocomposites had been significantly enhanced. In addition, the thermal degradation kinetics further indicated that AB‐LDH could improve the thermal stability of PLA significantly. POLYM. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been widely studied for biomedical applications due to their excellent properties, such as good biocompatibility, degradability, interlayer ion exchangeability, high loading capacity, pH‐responsive release, and large specific surface area. Furthermore, the flexibility in the structural composition and ease of surface modification of LDHs makes it possible to develop specifically functionalized LDHs to meet the needs of different applications. In this review, the recent advances of LDHs for biomedical applications, which include LDH‐based drug delivery systems, LDHs for cancer diagnosis and therapy, tissue engineering, coatings, functional membranes, and biosensors, are comprehensively discussed. From these various biomedical research fields, it can be seen that there is great potential and possibility for the use of LDHs in biomedical applications. However, at the same time, it must be recognized that the actual clinical translation of LDHs is still very limited. Therefore, the current limitations of related research on LDHs are discussed by combining limited examples of actual clinical translation with requirements for clinical translation of biomaterials. Finally, an outlook on future research related to LDHs is provided.

MgAl Layered Double Hydroxides Intercalated with EDTA: Cu(II) Recovery and Mechanism

In water treatment, it is a valid way to remove Cu(II) efficiently via layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated with chelate, but the desorption and its mechanism remain an unsolved difficult problem. To solve this problem, MgAl LDHs intercalated with EDTA (MgAl-EDTA-LDHs) was synthesized by onestep co-precipitation method, and applied to recover Cu 2 +. The characterizations of SEM, XRD, XPS, EA and AAS were employed, and the results showed that MgAl-EDTA-LDHs exhibited a typical lamellar structure, the adsorption capacity of MgAl-EDTA-LDHs on Cu 2 + could reach 79.69 mg/g, which was attributed to the chelation of EDTA and chemical bonding of hydroxyl (À OH) on the surface of LDHs layers. In addition, the adsorption capacity could achieve 45.75 mg/g after eluting by Na 2 CO 3 solution, which was relevant to the ion exchange by CO 3 2À. Herein, the adsorption and desorption mechanism of MgAl-EDTA-LDHs on Cu 2 + was expounded, which may pave a new way to recover the heavy metal and provide a theoretical guidance for future research.
