Structure‐Controlled, Vertical Graphene‐Based, Binder‐Free Electrodes from Plasma‐Reformed Butter Enhance Supercapacitor Performance

Abstract: Vertical graphene nanosheets (VGNS) hold great promise for high‐performance supercapacitors owing to their excellent electrical transport property, large surface area and in particular, an inherent three‐dimensional, open network structure. However, it remains challenging to materialise the VGNS‐based supercapacitors due to their poor specific capacitance, high temperature processing, poor binding to electrode support materials, uncontrollable microstructure, and non‐cost effective way of fabrication. Here we … Show more

“…Pristine VGNS was observed to uniformly cover the skeleton of Ni foam that had submillimeter scale voids (Figure 1a), whereas cavities at the submicron scale were formed between neighboring graphene nanosheets arising from the vertical orientation of interconnected VGNS (Figure 1b). 18 Moreover, the maze-like networks of graphene nanosheets were easily distinguishable in the high-magnification SEM image (inset of Figure 1b). The height of the graphene nanosheets was~2 μm, as illustrated by the cross-sectional SEM image in Figure 1c.…”

“…18,19 VGNS consists of few-layered graphene sheets self-organized in a vertical orientation with an inherently open and interconnected array structure. The structural rigidity of VGNS can prevent the restacking of graphene nanosheets, a commonly observed problem in horizontal graphene.…”

“…[7][8][9] Pseudocapacitive materials store electrochemical energy in a similar manner as carbon-based materials but have a specific capacitance that is usually one order of magnitude larger. Among various pseudocapacitive materials, manganese oxides (MnO x ) have attracted the strongest interest because of their natural abundance, low cost and environmental friendliness.…”
