Structure, shape, topology: entangled concepts in molecular chemistry

Abstract: The concepts of molecular structure and molecular shape are ubiquitous in the chemical literature, where they are often taken as synonyms, with unavoidable drawbacks in chemistry teaching. A third concept, molecular topology, is less frequent but it is a reference term in molecular research domains such as Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships. The present paper proposes an epistemological analysis of these three notions, aimed at clarifying the nature of their relationship, as well as the contiguities… Show more

“…Natural science is consisting of branches that explain nature characteristics from various perspectives. Chemistry is also known as the center of nature science besides other various natural science branches (Ghibaudi, 2019). Chemistry can explain and build the connection between all-natural characteristics that are explained by other matters.…”

“…The main chemistry studies mastery especially chemistry bonding studies properly needed to understand the whole chemistry studies. Chemistry bonding is one of the main chemistry studies that have a role in the chemistry changes process (Ghibaudi, Cerruti, & Villani, 2019). This matter can be understanding if the students have a good representational skill.…”

“…It has long been known that the shape of a molecule has a profound effect on its biological activity. The shape complementarity between an enzyme and its substrate(s) was the first such link to be made and subsequently led to the expectation that any ligand interacting with a protein is likely to require an appropriate shape; the work of Fischer, in the nineteenth century, was followed by that of Pauling, and their ideas remain relevant across many areas of science. …”
