Structures and Magnetic Properties of a Series of Metal Phosphonoacetates Synthesized from in Situ Hydrolysis of Triethyl Phosphonoacetate

Abstract: Seven new metal phosphonoacetates, namely, [Zn 7 (OH) 2 (ppat) 4 (H 2 O) 2 ] (1), H 3 O[Zn(ppat)] (2), [Zn 3 (4,4′-bpy) 6), and [Fe III (ppat)(H 2 O)] (7) (H 3 ppat ) phosphonoacetic acid, 4,4′-bpy ) 4,4′-bipyridine, dmpz ) N,N′-dimethylpiperazine) were hydrothermally synthesized by the in situ hydrolysis of triethyl phosphonoacetate route. X-ray crystallography reveals that 1 shows a two-dimensional layered structure containing octahedral, tetrahedral, and trigonal bipyramidal Zn sites and an unprecedented in… Show more

“…In related transition metal systems, the hydrolysis of di-and trialkyl phosphonates has similarly been used to prepare a variety of transition metal carboxyphosphonates. [50][51][52][53] In these systems, the phosphonate ligands were generated in situ for the purpose of: (1) removing the need to synthesize the acid form of the ligand and (2) gradually introducing the ligand and thus yielding crystals sufficiently large for single-crystal X-ray diffraction.…”

“…It has become a forceful and promising approach in crystal engineering of coordination complexes, especially for those not accessible from a direct reaction of metal ions and ligands. [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] More than 10 types of in situ ligand reactions have been reviewed by Zhang and Chen recently, 20,28 hydrothermal decarboxylation being one of the reactions also observed by several authors. [29][30][31][32] However, the decarboxylation of free carboxylic acids is often difficult, except for some activated acids such as aryl carboxylic acid.…”
