Reaching workers in small worksites presents economic and access barriers for occupational health nurses. Some barriers can be overcome through strategies based on cultural sensitivity. Day care centers employ young, low income, mostly minority women in settings with few workers onsite at anyone center. These settings were used to develop a culturally sensitive approach tested through onsite cardiovascular screening, informal interviews, and discussion of behavior change for better health. The study examined both the impact of the Healthier People Health Risk Appraisal (HPHRA) as a culturally appropriate recruitment strategy to involve a group of child day care workers in a cardiovascular disease (CVD) screening and risk reduction program and the effect of that program on observable CVD measures. While awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sexual abuse continues to grow, it has only been during the past few years that the military has realized the prevalence and impact of sexual abuse inflicted upon women while on active military duty. Though Veteran Administration (VA) agencies throughout the United States have given concerted attention to this problem, published resources specific to PTSD and military sexual abuse have been limited. In this article the authors present the results of a 2(1/2)-year endeavor to address the problem of PTSD and military sexual abuse at the Tulsa VA Outpatient Clinic. The project started with a research study and the subsequent initiation of a PTSD women veterans support group, and culminated in the development of resource manuals for both professional staff and women veterans.

The primary purpose of this study was to determine employees' perceptions of a wellness program resulting from collaboration between a small rural industry and a College of Nursing. Focus group methods were used to elicit evaluative data from 27 employees. A semi-structured interview guide of open-ended questions was used to elicit information. The employees readily identified the screenings and information they had received related to hypertension, blood sugar, and cholesterol to be helpful. Health behavior changes the employees identified based on the health promotion activities and screenings included diet changes, different food preparations, and exercise. The screenings were found to be beneficial because they helped them to understand the significance of the results and how they could alter them with health behaviors. The repeated screenings provided an opportunity for them to see how health behavior changes had affected their results.
