Studies on plant mucilages

Abstract: IN continuation of the work in progress in these laboratories on plant mucilages, the exalrfination of the tubers of Curculigo orchioides Gaertn. has been undertaken. Curculigo orchioides is a small herbaceous plant growing in the hotter regions of India and Ceylon. The tuberous root of this plant, which is called Kalimusli in Hindi, is largely used in the Ayurvcdic and Unani systems of medicine as, a tonic and for piles and diarrhoea.

“…The paper chromatographic method of Rao and Beri (11) also showed the presence of these two sugars and no others. The L-arabinose was identified by conversion to the diphenyl hydrazone melting a t 196" and also to the benzyl phenyl hydrazone melting at 174".…”

“…Some success has been reported in the separation of proteins and enzymes by paper chromatography {95, 126, 129, 252,301), though ionophoresis would appear to be a preferable technique, as discussed below. Many studies of carbohydrates, glycosides, and their derivatives by means of paper chromatographic separations have been made {2, 39,123,127, 140,142,157,181,192,214,224,235,275,283,284,295,299). Purines, pyrimidines, and the corresponding nucleotides and nucleosides have been separated by paper chromatography in several laboratories {47, 160-162, 185, 197, 226, 256), though with perhaps less success for quantitative study than by ion exchange columns.…”
