Studies on Production and Chemical Property of Singlet Oxygen and Superoxide Radical by Dyestuffs

Abstract: There are several low lying singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and superoxide radical ( ) − 2 − 2 O .The dose response relationship between singlet 1 O 2 production when sunlight expose of those dyestuffs (0-25 min), and (0-12 min) for super oxide ( ) − 2O production were studied .However benzanthrone produces detectable amount of 1 O 2, Although metanil yellow and p-aminodiphenylamine (p-ADPA) did not produce detectable amounts of 1 O 2 under similar conditions. The above dye stuffs are routinely used in textiles, cosm… Show more

“…One additional benet of preventing dye quenching is that it will favour reversibility of the cell function. 58 The causes of the decrease of dye quenching have been suggested to be steric factors and interaction processes involving non-bonding electrons that are competitive with pi-system charge-transfer complexation. 59 It should be noted that this aspect of the study of the effects of air on cell performance was neither planned nor performed in the present study.…”

“…It has also been suggested that singlet oxygen may be generated by decomposition of lipid peroxides [66]. However, irradiation in the presence of oxygen may be the major source of singlet oxygen.…”

“…However, irradiation in the presence of oxygen may be the major source of singlet oxygen. The production of singlet oxygen by plant photopigments is well established [see 67,68] and light may result in its generation from a number of naturally occurring compounds such as bilirubin, pterins, flavins and vitamin A (retinol) [69,70], and natural and synthetic dyes, including those found in some cosmetics [see 66]. An intriguing additional source of singlet oxygen is the reaction of ozone with a number of biological compounds including NAD(P)H, uric and ascorbic acids, by a mechanism that is believed to involve epoxide formation.…”
