Studies on some new and rare Reported Marine Planktonic Ciliates (Ciliophora: Oligotrichia) from Coastal Waters in North China

Abstract: Eight marine oligotrichous ciliates including one new genus, two new combinations, and five new species collected from the Yellow Sea, north-eastern China, are morphologically and biometrically investigated based on observations of living specimens and permanent preparations after protargol impregnation: Strombidium tintinnodes; Novistrombidium testaceum gen. nov., comb. nov. (formerly Strombidium testaceum); Tontonia turbinata sp. nov.; Pelagostrobilidium simile sp. nov.; Rimostrombidium orientale sp. nov.; S… Show more

“…The population of Strombidinopsis elongata from Puerto Cuatreros differs from the population described in north of China (SONG & BRADBURY, 1998) by having larger cell and macronucleous, but the similarities in body shape, number of external oral polikynetids and somatic kineties justify the assignment of these specimens to S. elongata. flaps.…”

“…They are commonly found in other coastal areas of the world MONTAGNES et al, 1988;LYNN & GILRON, 1993;LEAKEY et al, 1994;PETZ et al, 1995;SONG & BRADBURY, 1998). Some differences in cell size and in numbers of several structures from Puerto Cuatreros populations were observed.…”

“…Comparison with other populations. Spirotontonia turbinata was initially reported from coastal of north China (Song and Bradbury, 1998). Unfortunately, water temperature and salinity were not recorded for the occurrence.…”

“…It is conservatively estimated that there are more than 1000 oligotrich species worldwide, but only about 100 well described morphospecies, representing ca. 15 genera, have been documented (Liu et al, 2015a;Liu et al, 2015b;Song, 2005;Song and Bradbury, 1998;Song and Packroff, 1997;Song et al, 2000;Tsai et al, 2010;. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of oligotrichs are even more poorly documented, since only about 30 species from the subclass Oligotrichia have available SSU rDNA sequences.…”
