Studies on the surface properties and the adhesion to metal of polyethylene coatings modified with primary aromatic amines

Abstract: The surface free energy and acid–base characteristics of polyethylene coatings formed on steel in the presence of primary aromatic amines (PAAs) were investigated. PAAs were shown to interact with steel by a donor–acceptor mechanism. An increase in the coating adhesion is realized through chemical and physical bond formation between an adhesive and a substrate with the help of the PAA. The free surface energy of the contact‐to‐metal side of these coatings modified with PAA was shown to grow in parallel with th… Show more

“…For adhesion properties determination of modified coatings from the studied composite materials, the method of cathodic exfoliation was used. In this case, the characteristic property of the adhesion interaction is the defect diameter, which is formed in the coating of the composite material on the metal (steel grade St3) . Results, obtained by this method are shown in Table .…”

“…The metal surface was previously pretreated by sandpaper and subsequently degreased with acetone, in order to improve the mechanical adhesion. The adhesion of the EVA–metal compound was judged by the defect diameter after cathodic exfoliation for 8 hr at 8 V .…”

“…Although the surface energy cannot be measured directly, different indirect methods have been proposed in the literature 33, 34. In this work, the geometric‐mean34–36 approximations were used to get the dispersive and the nondispersive contributions to the total surface energy of the base, modified, and the unmodified PE composites. These expressions will be used here only to compare the effects produced in the surface fluorination.…”

“…High values of ΔD short relate to strong interactions of the components as well as to more durable joins. The parameter ΔD short was proved and established in recent years for modified and unmodified polyethylene, rubber, and epoxy coatings of various metal substrates . In this paper the shortened Berger method was used for all measurements in order to select the right combination with good adhesion and high resulting mechanical properties of hard–soft pairs.…”
