Studies on the Syntheses of Boron Hydride Systems.

Applioation of B H 9 as a potential feedstock for preparation of higher boron hydride systems has been demonstrated through the syntheses of a variety of materials in yields, in general, equal to or better than previous methods. Pats n. a-d) .INe.T.A~qTVTEf The structure of the [B 2 H 7 3-has been determined by X-ray and neutron diffraction studies. The anion has a bent 3-center hydrogen bridge bond which is of interest since prior theoretical work predicted that the ion would be linear. DDA new, simple preparation of BH 1 1 is described. Reduction of B H 9 by alkali metal napthalides and subsequent protonation by HMl has produced B H 1 1 in Z2% yield.Our earlier development of a simple, safe, and high yield synthesis of B 4 Ho has made available potentially convenient routes to metallapentaboranes through the reaction of ES 4 H ]-with suitable transition metal complexes. These possibilities have been pursued as adjuncts to our boron hydride syntheses. The following metallapentaboranes have been prepared and characterized.
