Study of Correlation Between EEG Electrodes for the Analysis of Cortical Responses Related to Binaural Hearing

Abstract: Binaural hearing is the ability of the human auditory system to integrate information received from both ears simultaneously. Binaural hearing is fundamental in understanding speech in noisy backgrounds. Any disfunction in one or both ears could cause a disruption in the processing mechanism. Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) are electrical potentials evoked by externally presented auditory stimuli from any part of the auditory system. A non-invasive technology, electroencephalography (EEG) is used for the mon… Show more

“…The EEG method eliminates reliance on participant literacy and communication skills and is relatively easy to perform [ 18 ], making it highly suitable for young children [ 19 ]. Although collecting an EEG can be more challenging than a traditional hearing assessment, using the correct stimulus parameters, recording standards, and processing techniques can make this method suitable and feasible for binaural hearing assessment [ 20 , 21 ].…”

“…The study was approved by the Humans Ethics Committee of Charles Darwin University, Australia as explained in H18014 _ Detecting Binaural Processing in the Audiometric EEG ( Ignatious et al., 2021 ; Miles et al., 2021 ). The willingness of volunteers to take part in the BMLD testing was documented through written consent and each subject completed a questionnaire regarding their otological history.…”

“…The tones for BMLD testing were given with a duration of 3 ms, 18 ms and 48 ms. The time durations were chosen to corresponds to the duration of signals that can be used for the generation of AEPs ( Ignatious et al., 2021 ; Miles et al., 2021 ): 3 ms for the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), 18 ms for the Middle Latency Response (MLR) and 48 ms for the Late Latency Response (LLR). The initial dB level for the masker is set as 20 dB while it is set at 40 dB for the tone.…”
