Study of Dissolution Behavior of Matrices Tablets Based on Alginate—Gelatin Mixtures as Prolonged Diltiazem Hydrochloride Release Systems

Abstract: The aim of this work was to develop prolonged diltiazem hydrochloride release matrices based on alginate-gelatin mixtures and establish the drug release mechanism. The erosion, swelling, and dissolution behavior of the tablets in different medium were evaluated. The different polyelectrolyte behavior and gel strength between type A Gelatin and type B Gelatin would explain the different swelling, erosion and dissolution behavior in the media with sudden pH change. The similar dissolution behavior in the pH, whi… Show more

“…While pure CS is soluble in low pH and insoluble in higher pH, alginate shows the opposite trend. However, a stable rigid drug delivery matrix of the alginate-CS polyelectrolyte complex can be produced by the electrostatic interaction between the carboxyl groups of alginic acid and amino groups on CS, which can protect the drug from the harsh acidic environment of the stomach (51,(82)(83)(84)(85)(86). Recently, this alginate-CS polyelectrolyte complex have also been utilised for the preparation of oral NPs (14,56,87).…”

“…Tablets are the most common oral solid dosage forms, because they are convenient to carry, the duration of action of the contained drugs can be controlled 1,2) and their taste or smell can be improved. 3,4) Although powder or capsule dosage forms are also useful orally, they have the drawback of attaching to the throat or pharynx, indicating that tablets have superior usability; however, elderly people and children often have difficulty swallowing conventional tablets or capsules.…”

“…Gelatin Microparticles, beads, tablets [97][98][99] Mixture of alginate and gelatin is crosslinked by calcium chloride or coacervated through pH modification of the blend. Glutaraldehyde and sodium carboxymethylcellulose may be added as additional crosslinking agent and as particle aggregation inhibitor respectively.…”
