Background: Axillary Ultrasound is an important tool in assessing regional lymph node status in women who are node negative clinically as many of them will prove to have axillary lymph node involvement on histopathology. The aim of the present study was to establish the role of axillary ultrasound in preoperative assessment of lymph node status in women with carcinoma breast and to correlate the findings of axillary ultrasound with the histopathology of resected axillary nodes.Methods: Forty patients (all women) were included in this study and the preoperative axillary ultrasound was done to know the status of axillary lymph nodes and the findings were correlated with histopathological findings of the resected nodes.Results: The sensitivity of axillary ultrasound was found to be 66.67%, specificity was 87.5%, accuracy 75%, positive predictive value (PPV) of 88.89% and negative predictive value of 63.4%.Conclusions: Axillary ultrasound is very important tool in assessing preoperative axillary lymph node status in patients with carcinoma breast. It is also important in assessment after inadequate axillary dissection and for follow up of non-treated axilla.

Introduction: Breast cancer is the commonest malignancy diagnosed among women worldwide. In Pakistan around 90,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Lymphnode involvement, tumor size, receptor status, tumor grade, presence of LVI, age and ethnicity are well recognized prognostic factors for breast cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of menopausal status with pathological and prognostic features of tumor in patients with stage I to III A breast cancer treated upfront with modified radical mastectomy. Material and Methods:This was a single institute observational retrospective study conducted at Nuclear Medicine Oncology and Radiotherapy Institute (NORI) Islamabad. A total of 381 patients with histopathologically proven diagnosis of Invasive ductal carcinoma after modified radical mastectomy were included from January 2009 to December 2013. Age, menopausal status, tumor site, tumor size, grade, lymphnode involvement, receptor status and presence of LVI were recorded on a particularly composed proforma. Statistical analysis for determining the association between menopausal status and pathologic features of tumor was performed using Chi-square test. P value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results:The minimum age of study population was 24 years and maximum age was 80 years with a mean age +/-SD of 48.5 +/-11.1 years. There was a statistically significant association between menopausal status and grade of tumor, lymphovascular invasion and HER2/neuoverexpression (p < 0.05). Conclusion:Grade of tumor, lymphovascular invasion and HER2/neu over expression in stage I to IIIA breast cancer has statistically significant association with menopausal status.

Background: Malignancy of breast is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women. Molecular organisation of breast cancer is considered as better predictive factor for diagnosis and treatment. The present study was done with the aim to find out clinicopathological characterization and correlation of breast tumor with receptor status progesterone (PR), estrogen (ER) and human epidermal receptor protein-2/neu status (HER-2/neu).Methods: This was a prospective study done on 50 patients with breast carcinoma. The expression patterns of PR, ER and HER-2/NEU were studied. Clinical features, pathologic features such as age of the patient, tumour size, grade, and lymph node status and their correlation with receptors were compared.Results: Of the 50 patients, ER positivity was seen in 42% cases, PR positivity in 32% and HER-2/neu (3+) in 30% cases. Majority of grade I tumors were ER and PR positive and majority of grade III tumors were triple negative. Triple negative profile was seen in secretory carcinoma. ER, PR and HER2 status was not significantly associated with age of the patients and tumour size. The immunohistochemical types ER/PR +ve Her2neu +ve and ER/PR -ve Her2neu -ve are significantly related to grading of tumours.Conclusions: From the results, it was concluded that ER, PR and HER-2 status correlates well with histopathological grading. These results highlight the fact that molecular subtypes correlate with diagnosis and aid in targeted therapy.
