Life support systems for long-term space missions or extraterrestrial installations have to fulfill major functions such as purification of water and regeneration of atmosphere as well as the generation of food and energy. For almost 60 years ideas for biological life support systems have been collected and various concepts have been developed and tested. Microalgae as photosynthetic organisms have played a major role in most of these concepts. This review deals with the potentials of using eukaryotic microalgae for life support systems and highlights special requirements and frame conditions for designing space photobioreactors especially regarding illumination and aeration. Mono- and dichromatic illumination based on LEDs is a promising alternative for conventional systems and preliminary results yielded higher photoconversion efficiencies (PCE) for dichromatic red/blue illumination than white illumination. Aeration for microgravity conditions should be realized in a bubble-free manner, for example, via membranes. Finally, a novel photobioreactor concept for space application is introduced being parameterized and tested with the microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. This system has already been tested during two parabolic flight campaigns.

A methodology for performing radiative transfer calculations in computational fluid dynamic simulations of gas-liquid multiphase flows is presented. By considering an externally irradiated bubble column photoreactor as our model system, the bubble scattering coefficients were determined through add-on functions by employing as inputs the bubble volume fractions, number densities, and the fractional contribution of each bubble size to the bubble volume from four different multiphase modeling options. The scattering coefficient profiles resulting from the models were significantly different from one another and aligned closely with their predicted gas-phase volume fraction distributions. The impacts of the multiphase modeling option, initial bubble diameter, and gas flow rates on the radiation distribution patterns within the reactor were also examined. An increase in air inlet velocities resulted in an increase in the fraction of larger sized bubbles and their contribution to the scattering coefficient. However, the initial bubble sizes were found to have the strongest impact on the radiation field.

Resumen En este trabajo se evaluó un Fotobiorreactor tipo Airlift (FBR) a escala banco para el cultivo y generación de biomasa microalgal. El proceso de evaluación se desarrolló en diferentes etapas desde el análisis de variables de diseño, selección de materiales, ensamblaje del equipo y pre-experimentación. El equipo comprende cuatro subsistemas: presión, temperatura, agitación y lumínico; cada uno de estos es descrito de acuerdo con los parámetros relevantes que garantizan el adecuado diseño teórico de los mismos. El funcionamiento del equipo fue verificado lo que permitió la determinación de las condiciones y rangos de operación básica del fotobiorreactor.Abstract This paper evaluates a bench-scale airlift photobioreactor (PBR) for the culture and generation of microalgal biomass. The evaluation process was developed in different stages from the analysis of design variables, selection of materials, equipment assembly, and preexperimentation. The equipment has four sub-systems: pressure, temperature, mixing, and light. Each one of those is described according to the relevant parameters that guarantee their adequate theoretical design. The functioning of the equipment was verified and this allowed us to determine the conditions and ranges of the photobioreactor basic operation.Palabras Clave: fotobiorreactor Airlift, biomasa, microalgas.
