Study of single-pion production by weak charged currents in low-energyνdinteractions

Abstract: This paper gives the results of a study of single-pion production by the weak charged current utilizing the wide-band muon-type-neutrino beam at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. The data were obtained from hydrogen and deuterium fillings of the 12-ft bubble chamber. The methods of event selection and separation from background are given as are the details of the corrections and systematic effects in the data sample. The energy-dependent cross sections and differential distributions are presented for the … Show more

“…Normalization differences between data and predictions of event generators can be driven by cross-section uncertainties for ν µ /ν µ -induced pion production in scattering on free nucleons, as well as by flux uncertainties. The data constraining these processes are sparse, and in the case of ν µ +p → µ − +π + +p, the two bubble chamber measurements using 0.5 to ∼ 3 GeV neutrinos reported cross sections that differed by ∼ 30% in absolute normalization [41,42]. (A recent reanalysis obtains consistency between these two data sets [43] , however the generator predictions shown here have not been tuned to the results of this reanalysis.)…”

“…Assuming, as proposed in Ref. [29], the q 2 dependence [24,30]. On the other hand, the C A 5 (0) value is some 30% smaller than the prediction obtained from the off diagonal Goldberger-Treiman relation (GTR) that gives…”

“…For this reason, we fix its value at ρ = 0.75 ρ 0 , with ρ 0 = 17 fm −3 the saturation density. Finally, we modify the free ∆πN -decay constant (f ∆πN ) to take into account the E-dependent medium modifications: [14] where a cut in the invariant mass W < 1400 MeV is applied in both the data and the model. In (b) the cut in W is removed and BNL data [9] are also included.…”
