Electrocatalytic Reduction of Oxygen by FePt Alloy Nanoparticles

Fe x Pt100- x nanoparticles of different compositions (x = 63, 58, 54, 42, 15, and 0) were prepared and loaded onto a glassy carbon (GC) electrode where their catalytic activities in the electroreduction of oxygen were examined and compared. Cyclic and rotating disk voltammetric studies of the resulting Fe x Pt100- x /GC electrodes showed that the catalytic activity for oxygen reduction exhibited a peak-shape dependence on the particle composition (x). Among the series of nanocatalysts under study, Fe42Pt58 particles showed the maximum activity for O2 reduction in terms of the reduction overpotential and current density. This was accounted for by the effects of the Fe content on the electronic structures of the Pt active sites and the resulting Pt−O interactions. Kinetic analyses showed that direct four-electron reduction of adsorbed oxygen occurred on these catalyst surfaces. Additionally, the rate constant of O2 reduction increased with increasing Pt content in the alloy particles; yet, at x ≤ 42, the rate constant exhibited only a very small increment. These studies suggest that the Fe42Pt58 particles might represent an optimal composition for oxygen reduction among the series of nanoparticle catalysts under the present study.

“…For example, surface enrichment of Au was detected for the Au 3 Pd(100), 16 Au 3 Pt(110), 17 and Cu 3 Au(111), 18 surfaces in lowenergy electron diffraction ͑LEED͒ studies. In other LEED work it was found that for Pt 78 Ni 22 and Pt 50 Ni 50 , 19 and Pt 80 Co 20 20 the top first three layers of the surface exhibited structured compositional oscillation. For example, in the Pt 78 Ni 22 (111) alloy surface, the first layer was almost purely composed of Pt atoms (99 Ϯ 1%) while the second layer contained only 30 Ϯ 5% Pt, the third layer 87 Ϯ 10%, and the deeper layers 78% Pt.…”

Results of a periodic spin-density-functional theory study of the electronic structure and the local adsorption properties of the Pt 3 Cr(111) alloy surface are presented. A slab composed of four-atom-layer is used to model the ͑111͒ surface of the L1 2 bulk phase with the two topmost layers and adsorbed species allowed to relax. Adsorption energies for OH and H 2 O have been calculated as functions of initial OH coverage. Using these energies in a model based on reaction energies for acid electrolyte, we have calculated reversible potential shifts, ⌬U ‫ؠ‬ , for OH ads formation from H 2 O ads on different surface sites of the Pt 3 Cr(111) alloy relative to the Pt͑111͒ surface. For the first 0.25 monolayer ͑ML͒ coverage, H 2 O and OH are more stable on the Cr sites and a ⌬U ‫ؠ‬ ϭ Ϫ0.55 V is calculated. For the next 0.25 ML instalment, forming OH ads on Pt, ⌬U ‫ؠ‬ ϭ Ϫ0.15 V. Shifts in U ‫ؠ‬ for going to 0.75 and 1 ML OH ads coverage are both positive. Hydrogen bonding between adsorbed molecules plays a role at higher coverage. O 2 adsorption was studied on the 0.5 ML OH ads covered surface and was found to bond more weakly than H 2 O, allowing us to suggest that if the sputtered alloy surface is active toward O 2 reduction, as the sputtered Pt 3 Co and Pt 3 Ni surfaces are, Pt islands may be responsible.
