Study of the toxic interaction between monensin and tiamulin in rats

Opinion of the Scientific Panel on additives and products or substances used in animal feed (FEEDAP) on the safety and the efficacy of product “BIO-COX 120G” as feed additive in accordance with Council Directive 70/524/EEC

“…Clinically important interactions between the ionophore anticoccidials and the antibiotic tiamulin are well known phenomena in chickens, turkeys and other species. Principally the same toxic symptoms were seen after administration of monensin alone or in combination with tiamulin (Hanrahan et al, 1981;Umemura et al, 1985;Van Vleet et al, 1987;Szucs et al, 2000a). The interaction depends on dose (Meingassner et al, 1979;Lehel et al, 1995;Weisman et al, 1983aWeisman et al, , 1983b and the ionophore itself (salinomycin concurrently given with tiamulin in feed caused a 60 % loss in a chicken breeder flock (Lin, 1995), co-administration of tiamulin and lasalocid being without adverse effects (Comben, 1984)).…”
