Study of variables commonly used in examination of equine colic cases to assess prognostic value

Abstract: Summary In a retrospective study, the prognostic value and individual merit of seven variables, used in routine examination of colic cases, were tested. The following variables proved to be significant in discriminating between horses which survived and those which died: heart rate (P<0.00005), packed cell volume (P<0.00005) and intensity of colic signs (P<0.0001).

“…Previous prognostic models (Parry et al 1983;Puotunen-Reinert 1986;Orsini et al 1988;Reeves et al , 1990Reeves et al , 1992Pascoe et al 1990;Furr et al 1995) have sought to use pre-operative clinical data to predict short-term outcome. T h e modelling techniques used in our study also differ from those employed previously.…”

“…the wide variety in location, nature, extent and duration of lesions, that prediction of success or failure in individual cases is almost impossible. Besides, nobody has hitherto been able to demonstrate clear criteria/parameters for a reliable prognosis, though it has been established (7,8) that those variables which assess cardiovascular integrity are the most valuable indices. But these parameters cannot take into account intra-and post-operative complications, the skills of the surgeon, and non-quantifiable factors such as the character of the patient.…”
