Study on Application of Interval Type 2 Fuzzy Logic Control for Gap Width Controller Used in EDM Machine

Abstract: This paper presents a new method for controlling the gap distance in an EDM machine. Existing gap width control method using PI controller does not perform efficiently in a highly nonlinear and time-variant process such as EDM. In this method, constant tuning of the PI controller is required to achieve a stable and efficient EDM process. The new gap control method present in this paper uses an artificial intelligent type 2 fuzzy logic control to control the gap distance between the electrode and the workpiece.… Show more

“…The fuzzy logic control based on Type 2 Fuzzy Sets (T2-FS) present a suitable solution for the control of non-linear systems [29]. T2-FS were first proposed in [33][34][35] as an extension to Type 1 Fuzzy Sets (T1-FS), to increase the fuzziness of the relations.…”

“…The membership functions used for the inputs and the output are presented in Figures 7 and 8. The T2-FLC in Figure 6 is characterized by IF-THEN fuzzy rules-base, but its antecedents and consequents are now T2-FS [29,31,32]. The use of a T2-FLC proves to be more advantageous than the use of a PI/PID controller, thanks to its modifiable control surface which offers better performance, especially when the order of the system is greater than two, while it includes oscillatory modes [30].…”
