Study on copolymers synthesized from 2,3-epoxypropyl-3-(2-furyl) acrylate – styrene and their glass fiber reinforced composites

Abstract: 3-(2-Furyl) acrylic acid (FAA) and 2,3-epoxypropyl-3-(2-furyl) acrylate (EPFA) were synthesized. EPFA was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 HNMR) spectroscopy. Copolymerization of prepared EPFA was carried out with styrene as the comonomer, by varying the mole ratio of EPFA:styrene at different reaction times, using benzoyl peroxide as an initiator at 80 ° C in toluene. FAA, EPFA and copolymers were characterized by FTIR and 1 HNMR spectrosco… Show more

“…In fact, such an adhesion is supposed to be of particular importance to achieve an effective toughening of epoxy resin [17][18][19]. In continuation to our previously reported copolymerization of 2,3-epoxypropyl-3-(2-furyl) acrylate (EPFA) with acrylonitrile (AN) and with styrene [20,21], the copolymerization of EPFA and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was planned to synthesize a novel prepolymer containing a furan moiety, in addition to an epoxy ring, which could be cured to the infusible mass by using different curing agents. Various crosslinking agents such as aliphatic diamines, triamines, tetraamines, aromatic diamines, acid anhydride polyamides, Lewis acids and bases are used to crosslink the epoxy resin [22][23][24][25][26].…”

“…EPFA was synthesized according to our recent publication [20,21]. Iodine values and epoxy equivalent weights (EEW) of brownish yellow viscous EPFA resin were determined by a reported method [31]; the observed iodine value and EEW are 35 g equiv -1 and 187 g equiv -1 , respectively.…”
