Study on Mechanical, Thermal and Electrical Characterizations of Nano-SiC/Epoxy Composites

Abstract: This report covers the results of a study on evaluating the effect of nano-SiC particles on mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of epoxy by lap shear, TGA, DSC and electrical tests. Epoxy composites filled with micro-SiC particles were also studied for comparison. The mechanisms of performance improvement were discussed in detail. The results showed that with identical loading, silane treated nano-SiC filled nanocomposites have the best properties. The volume resistivity decrease, dielectric constant… Show more

“…#-SiC particles with average particle size of 0.75 µm and irregularly polyhedral shape were obtained from Karl Co. Ltd., China. Micrographs of the micro-SiCs and the micro-SiC/epoxy composite can be seen in our earlier works [29,30], respectively. Carboxyl-functionalized MWCNTs (COOHMWCNTs) were provided by Chengdu Organic Chemicals Co. Ltd., Chinese Academy of Sciences, and used as-received.…”

“…2) It is known that the thermal conductivity of resins can be enhanced by adding ceramic fillers, and many reports have been published with the aim of enhancing the thermal conductivity of resins by adding of alumina (Al 2 O 3 ), 3) carbon fibers, 4) nanotubes, 5) silicon carbide, 6) and nitride fillers.…”

“…Thermosetting epoxies have shown much promise, especially in the field of dielectrics, due to their good insulating and mechanical properties [2]. The ability to mix two stable liquids into a combined system that can be hardened, or 'cured', also makes it a good candidate for fillers to be added during the liquid phase to create a composite.…”
