Introduction: Traditional animal- and mineral-based medicines are widely used in the Gansu-Ningxia-Inner Mongolia junction zone, a region with diverse ethnic groups and cultures. This study aims to document, conserve, and explore the potential of these medicines for further research and sustainable development of ethnic medicine.Methods: We interviewed 56 informants from different ethnic backgrounds and analyzed their responses quantitatively. Additionally, a comparative analysis with adjacent regions was conducted, providing invaluable contextual insights.Results: The study unveiled a diverse array of traditional medicines in the Gansu-Ningxia-Inner Mongolia junction zone. A total of 47 animal-based medicines were identified, ranging from insects and scorpios to distinctive animal organs. Of notable significance was Moschus, emerging as a pivotal traditional Chinese medicine resource. In parallel, 12 mineral-based medicines were cataloged, procured both locally and from “pharmacies”. Female informants, frequently local herbal practitioners, demonstrated broader knowledge of medicines. The analysis of 13 villages revealed varying perceptions of medicine importance, underscoring the wealth of traditional knowledge. Specific medicines, such as Feng-Mi and Xie-Zi, were widely used and valued in local healthcare practices for their cultural and medicinal benefits.Conclusion: This study provides a comprehensive overview of traditional animal- and mineral-based medicines in the Gansu-Ningxia-Inner Mongolia junction zone. It highlights the need for preserving and applying these practices in a sustainable manner. It also lays a solid foundation for future research on ethnic medicine, which can contribute to the holistic wellbeing of local communities.

In the Loess Plateau region, loess, as a widely distributed building material, is often used as a filling material for dams. When the water level reaches a certain height, the body of a dam is prone to shear failure due to the penetration of water. The change in the shear performance of local loess filler can affect the overall strength of loess dams. Therefore, the filler of a loess dam is selected to study the shear performance. The progressive failure process of a loess dam is simulated. The shear failure characteristics of loess filler under the influence of water content, confining pressure, and dry density were explored. The characteristics of the shear failure of a loess dam were analyzed. The remolded loess is prone to shear expansion failure under low confining pressure, low water content, and high dry density, and is prone to shear shrinkage failure under high confining pressure, high water content, and low dry density. When the water content is constant, the cohesion increases with the increase in dry density. When the dry density is constant, the internal friction angle generally increases with the increase in water content. However, when the dry density is high, the permeability of the remolded loess is weakened, resulting in uneven water distribution under a low water content, which affects the test results. The failure process of the loess dam is a progressive shear failure, which is affected by the water level and water pressure, and is destroyed under the action of pore water pressure and water body lateral pressure.

Analysis of Mechanical Properties of Loess with Cement Incorporation Ratio

Taking loess as the research object, the influence of cement content on mechanical properties of loess was studied. Firstly, the basic physical parameters of loess were obtained through laboratory physical index test, and improved by using Portland cement. Secondly, under different incorporation ratios (3%, 5%, 7%, 9%), heavy compaction test and liquid-plastic limit test were carried out respectively to obtain mechanical parameters of cement-improved loess. Finally, the shear strength parameters and compressive strength of the improved soil samples are obtained by unconsolidation undrained triaxial shear test and unconfined compressive strength test. The results show that the liquid limit, plastic limit and plastic index of loess improved by adding cement increase compared with the original soil sample, indicating that the binding force between soil particles is improved and the plasticity is enhanced. The variation range of dry density and water content has no obvious relationship with the content of cement. At the same time, the compressibility of soil is reduced and the collapsibility of soil is eliminated. With the increase of age, the strength of cement-modified soil also increases. Through unconsolidated and undrained triaxial shear tests and unconfined compressive strength tests, the strength of loess improved significantly after adding cement, and the strength of soil-cement increased with the increase of cement content, and water stability was obviously improved.
