Study on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Loess Q4 in Lanzhou Rail Transit Area

Abstract: Background: Part of tunnel of rail transit of line 1# in Lanzhou city passes through loess. Loess has obvious water sensitivity and anisotropy, these obvious characteristics will have different degrees of influence on different projects. Objective: To compare the differences of shear strength with the vertical and horizontal direction through triaxial and direct shear test, and permeability of samples in different directions. Method: The Q4 loess undisturbed sample respectively from vertical and horizontal… Show more

“…During the Han dynasty, it played a crucial role as one of the key passages along the Silk Road and served as an important military stronghold in ancient Northwest China, functioning as a defensive outpost ( June 2016 ). Presently, the area enjoys robust transportation infrastructure, including major highways such as the Lanzhou-Xinjiang and Ningdong Expressways, as well as railway lines such as the Lanzhou-Xinjiang and Lanzhou-Chongqing Railways, facilitating seamless connectivity both within the region and with neighboring provinces and regions ( Gao and Dong, 2020 ; Cao, 2021 ). The economy of the region leans predominantly on traditional agriculture and animal husbandry, with Han, Hui, Mongolian, Tibetan, Tujia, and other ethnic groups constituting the primary demographic.…”

“…According to the results of the test, we improved the local loess. Adding a small amount of attapulgite and nano-montmorillonite can greatly improve the shear strength of loess (Cao 2021) [24].…”
