Abstract:In this paper, the pulse waveform of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The variations of SBS pulse waveform with pump parameters, structural parameters and medium parameters are experimentally investigated with a Nd∶YAG Q-switched laser,and numerically simulated using SBS theory model. Section: The Relation Between Spontaneous and Pump-depleted Sbs Spectrummentioning
A theoretical model for calculating spontaneous and stimulated Brillouin scattering(SBS) spectra is described. An empirical formula for the Stokes output spectral linewidth, a function of spontaneous Brillouin linewidth and the exponential gain coefficient, is obtained by the calculated data fitting. The formula holds true for two cases involving pump undepletion and depletion. The lineshape change from spontaneous to highly pump-depleted SBS spectra is also investigated. The result shows that for the pump power below the SBS threshold, the Stokes output spectral lineshape evolves from Lorentzian to approximately Gaussian as the pump power increases. For the pump power near or beyond the threshold, the SBS spectrum is in the form of a steady Gaussian profile, and the spectral linewidth comes to a certain value about 7 times narrower than the spontaneous one. The theoretical results are experimentally demonstrated by using several common liquid media.
We demonstrated stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) of carbon disulfide (CS 2 ) influenced by β-carotene in a liquid-core optical fiber (LCOF). Owing to the double fluorescence characteristics and large third-order optical nonlinearity of β-carotene, the high-order Stokes lines, such as the seventh-order Stokes line of CS 2 , can be observed at a relatively low input-laser power. The thresholds of Stokes lines lowered with the addition of the carotenoid when the concentration of solution was within 10 −12 and 10 −7 mol/L; the threshold increments and intensities of Stokes lines were correlative with the fluorescence profile of β-carotene: when the fluorescence intensity of the wavenumber region on the spectrum was high, the Stokes line intensity was also high and its threshold increment was small, and vice versa. These results are expected to be worthy of the applications on the tunable laser and the seeding laser.
