The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a satellite-borne particle detector launched on December 17th, 2015, with different scientific objectives, looking for signatures of Dark Matter decay or annihilation, performing gamma-ray astronomy and providing precise measurements of galactic Cosmic Ray (CR) energy spectra. Accurate measurements of hadronic interaction cross sections play a key role in the determination of CR fluxes. The survival probabilities have been implemented to study hadronic interaction cross sections with the BGO calorimeter target for Carbon nuclei in a wide kinetic energy range from a few GeV to TeV, by using data collected by the DAMPE experiment. The results have been then compared with Geant4 simulations of the interaction cross-sections performed by adopting the Glauber-Gribov Model. The details of the measured hadronic interaction cross sections are here presented and discussed.

Abstract“A Craftsman Must Sharpen His Tools to Do His Job,” said Confucius. Nuclear detection and readout techniques are the foundation of particle physics, nuclear physics, and particle astrophysics to reveal the nature of the universe. Also, they are being increasingly used in other disciplines like nuclear power generation, life sciences, environmental sciences, medical sciences, etc. The article reviews the short history, recent development, and trend of nuclear detection and readout techniques, covering Semiconductor Detector, Gaseous Detector, Scintillation Detector, Cherenkov Detector, Transition Radiation Detector, and Readout Techniques. By explaining the principle and using examples, we hope to help the interested reader underst and this research field and bring exciting information to the community.

The Calibrations of the DAMPE γ-Ray Effective Area

The Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a cosmic-ray detector as well as a pair-converting γ-ray telescope. The effective area, reflecting the geometrical cross-section area, the γ-ray conversion probability, and the photon selection efficiency, is important in γ-ray analyses. In this work, we find a significant time variation in the effective area, as large as ∼−4% yr−1 at 2 GeV for the high-energy trigger. We derive the data-based correction factors to the effective areas and apply corrections to both the effective areas and the exposure maps. The calibrated exposure can be ∼12% smaller than the Monte Carlo one on average at 2 GeV. The calibration is further verified using the observation of the Vela pulsar, showing the spectral parameters with the correction are more consistent with those in the Fermi-LAT catalog than the ones without correction. All the corrections are now implemented in the latest version of the DAMPE γ-ray analysis toolkit DmpST.
