Study on the Development of Antiviral Spandex Fabric Coated with Poly(Hexamethylene Biguanide) Hydrochloride (PHMB)

Abstract: The spread of COVID-19 has brought about huge losses around the world. This study aims to investigate the applicability of PHMB used for developing antiviral spandex clothing against coronavirus. PHMB was qualitatively determined on the surface of spandex fabrics by using BPB. The antiviral analysis shows that the PHMB-treated spandex fabric can kill 99% of the coronavirus within 2 h of contact, which suggests that the spandex fabric treated with PHMB could be used for developing antiviral clothing against cor… Show more

“…coating of leather showed a 10-fold (*p< 0.05) reduction in virus titre as to uncoated leather (Table 4). This result is analogous to the activity obtained against SARS-CoV-2 (87 %) when polyester fabrics were printed with Selenium Nanoparticles [56] and close to those observed for spandex fabric coated with poly(Hexamethylene Biguanide) hydrochloride (PHMB) [57]. Table 4.…”

“…Spandex is present in the Bloch masks and three of the textiles with the lowest recovery, HJ, BSJ, and BWT. The hypothesis that spandex has inherent antiviral properties is supported by the observation that Murine coronavirus infectivity was reduced by 66.29% after a 2 h exposure to untreated (control) spandex …”

“…ISO 18184 provides guidelines for antiviral testing of textiles, including a 2 h contact time using any one of the list of approved animal viruses . An example that applies both tests on a porous material demonstrates that surface treatment can improve both antibacterial and antiviral properties . Untreated spandex-cotton has no antibacterial properties using the TM100 method, but treatment with a bactericide resulted in a 100% inhibition of test bacteria after 24 h. However, after a 2 h exposure to m , the untreated spandex-cotton viral infectivity was reduced by 66.29%, but treatment increased this to 99.38%.…”

“…Due to its excellent elasticity, spandex integrates the comfort, function, and beauty of textiles and has become an important raw material in the textile industry’s development. As a result, spandex applications have rapidly expanded from traditional textiles to emerging fields such as sports, medical, sanitary, and quartermaster products [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Moreover, in recent years, due to the influence of intelligent wearable electronic products, the research boom of intelligent electronic textiles has risen in the textile field, resulting in high demand for conductive sensing materials with high flexibility and elasticity [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”
