Study on the Dyeing Properties of Poly(Lactic Acid) and Silk Yarns with Natural Dyes

Abstract: This research aimed to study the dyeing properties on the PLA and silk yarns of the natural dyes obtained from various materials, viz. marigold petals (Tagetes erecta L.), rhubarb rhizomes (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), garcinia barks (Garcinia Dulcis Kurz), turmeric rhizomes (Curcuma Longa Linn.), sappan barks (Caesalpinia sappan Linn.) and catechu barks (Acacia catechu Willd.). The color properties of the dyed yarns was determined and compared. The results observed the different color properties (L*, a* and b* val… Show more

“…Among the examined dyes, only turmeric dye gives a high degree of color yield on PLA. 41 Wu et al 42 described the kinetics and thermodynamics of dyeing PLA fibers with curcumin (turmeric). Dyeing of knitted fabrics made of PLA fibers and comparable PET was performed using natural orange, natural red brown, turmeric, and cassumunar dyes.…”

“…The results showed that only the turmeric dye performed well on PLA. 147 Like disperse dyes, the addition of POSS nanoparticles enhanced the dyeability of natural dyes. 148 PLA fabrics have also been dyed with vat dyes.…”

“…In Java, the bark is used to dye mat (Lim 2012). G. dulcis is one of the most important sources of natural dye that gives a yellow colorant (Ujjin and Suesat 2012;Nakpathom et al 2012). The trunk, fruit, and the bark of the G. dulcis is shown in Figure 1.…”
