Study on the efficiency of some amine derivatives as corrosion and scale inhibitors in cooling water systems

Abstract: Corrosion and scaling are the main problems in cooling water systems. To address these problems, this paper aimed to study the inhibition efficiency of some amine derivatives for carbon steel in sea water using electrochemical techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The selected compounds, with different structures and sizes, were found to be adsorbed onto the carbon steel surface and had good performance as corrosion and scale inhibitors.Potentiodynami… Show more

“…Moreover, the variability of Tafel slopes (b a and b c ) approved that cathodic and anodic reactions, and oxygen reduction and metal dissolution were affected without modifying the mechanism of corrosion. 28 There is no noticeable shi in the corrosion potential values by adding the inhibitor molecules to both anodic and cathodic areas, which does not exceed 85 mV. Therefore, the assynthesized compounds can be categorized as mixed-type compounds.…”

“…All the previous electrochemical impedance parameters plus the charge transfer resistances (R ct ) and the inhibition efficiency (h%) values are listed in Table 6. The following equation can be used to calculate the values of the inhibition efficiency h% from (R ct ) values: 12,28,31 h%…”

“…Unlike to traditional volatile corrosion inhibitors, due to their extremely low vapour pressure these compounds will not evaporate and will not contaminate the surrounding environment [67,68]. Additionally, sometimes the use of organic inhibitors particularly polymeric and high molecular weighted organic compounds is limited due to their extremely low solubility in the polar corrosive media [69][70][71][72]. However, ionic liquids are highly soluble in the polar corrosive environments due to their ionic nature [73].…”

“…Most of the scales attached to the equipment surface are made of CaCO 3 , while a certain amount of CaSO 4 and Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 are also present, and these compounds are formed through a complex crystallization process. Currently, the addition of chemical inhibitors to water is the most common and practical method of reducing and preventing scaling . However, the clear majority of industrial equipment in operation will inevitably suffer from the deposition of scale.…”
