Study on the Influence of Construction of Shallow-Buried Underground Excavation Tunnel on Adjacent Masonry Buildings

Abstract: This study simulated the condition of below-wall raft foundation supported masonry structure perpendicularly penetrated by shallow-buried and mining tunnelling using 3D MIDAS/GTS software with consideration of the coaction of structure, ground and tunnel. The load and deformation patterns of structure before and after the penetration of tunnelling excavation face were evaluated. Results from the study showed that: when the horizontal distance between the central axis of the structure and the axis of the tunnel… Show more

“…The present paper assumes that: (1) the osmosis of groundwater is ignored and soil deformation will not change with time; (2) the coordinate method is adopted for the structure-foundation and foundation-soil deformation calculation [8]; (3) the surface settlement before tunnel excavation is zero, i.e., the surface settlement caused by the building gravity is neglected.…”

“…At present, the main research methods about the influences of underground tunnel construction on nearby buildings include the analytical method [4], measurement method [5] and the finite element method [6], [7], [8], etc. But the main research methods mainly concentrates on the shield tunnel.…”

“…The most commonly used method in urban subway construction is shallow underground excavation (SUE). It can effectively control surface subsidence [1][2][3], which is more suitable for urban subway construction [4]. In 1990, the Xidan station was the first subway station in China to use the shallow burying and undercutting method for construction [5,6].…”
