Study on the psychosocial aspects of risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers in Japan: a preliminary report

Abstract: Objective: This study investigated the psychosocial aspects of risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy in Japan. Methods: The subjects were 16 patients who underwent risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy at the Cancer Institute Hospital. Worry about cancer, emotional state and cancer-specific distress level were evaluated using a four-point Likert scale, the Profile of Mood States-Short Form and the Impact of Event Scale-Revised, respectively, before and 1 year after the surgery. “…Our findings are in line with the only other study that investigated distress over time in BRCA1/2-PV carriers, as they found declining scores [21]. Moreover, other studies seem to support our findings too as they found higher cancer worry in women at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer who had not (yet) undergone RRSO compared to women who had [27][28][29][30]. We should take into account that the concern levels that we measured may be higher than the concerns in daily life, as our measurements were in the period around surgery which may be a period with increased cancer concerns in general.…”

“…In general, these have shown minimal impact on global QOL beyond one-year post-RRSO and women report less cancer worry and more overall satisfaction with their decision to undergo RRSO. 18,19 Our study indeed confirmed that RRSO reduces cancer specific worry.…”

“…Our comparison of the data collected before and after RRSO showed a significant decrease in the severity of anxiety as a state (STAI X-1) in the whole study sample. The results reported by Lorenz et al (2014) and other authors correspond with ours [44,48]. Finch et al (2013) noticed a significantly lower level of anxiety in women subjected to RRSO before menopause compared with those operated upon after menopause [37].…”
