Study the oxidative stress parameters in serum and saliva of the workers at the heavy fuel oil combustion unite

Abstract

The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of the pollutants emitted from the combustion of heavy fuel oil (HFO) on the workers’ health who are working at this unit. This was done by checking the changes in serum and saliva total oxidant status ( TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and the oxidative stress index (OSI).The participants of the study were male workers (N= 83) who are working at the combustion of HFO unit in the electricity Dora station. They were divided into subgroups according to: their age, smoking habit, and the service period. Age and gender matched healthy individuals, (N=53) were also included in the study as a control group. Serum and saliva total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were measured using Erel's methods and OSI was calculated. Serum (TOS) and (OSI) levels were found to be higher (p-value <0.000) in the workers than in controls with a reduced levels of antioxidants (p-value <0.05) in these workers.
