Studying Biodiversity on Private Lands

Abstract: More than half of the land in the United States is privately owned. Private lands harbor a great amount of biodiversity, including at least some habitat for 95% of the federally listed species in the United States. It is important to conduct conservation biology research on private lands, but our review of the literature indicates that few conservation‐oriented field studies are conducted on private property. Based on our success in obtaining permission to conduct research on 43 land parcels in Sonoma County, … Show more

“…A large proportion of land within Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is privately owned and the difficulties of efficient monitoring on privately owned parcels of land may result in a bias towards a restricted set of ecological communities (Hilty and Merenlender 2003). At a landscape scale such unrepresentative sampling for monitoring schemes may lead to erroneous conclusions because public and private lands may differ in biodiversity and productivity.…”

“…In the United States, approximately 50% of rangelands are private lands . Among the species listed as threatened or endangered in the United States, 95% have at least some of their habitat on private lands, and 19% require habitat that exists exclusively on private land (Knight 1999, Hilty and Merenlender 2003, Merenlender et al 2004). This situation has led to a greater focus on maintaining ranches intact.…”

“…Because more than 80% of California's oak woodlands fall under private ownership (Bolsinger 1988;Greenwood et al 1993), this research was conducted mostly on private and also some public properties in Sonoma County, California (Hilty and Merenlender 2001) (Figure 1). …”
