“…The distribution of nNOS neurons in IG seems to be strictly related to the vascular anatomy of CC. The presence of nNOS neurons at the IG/CC boundary points to a role of these neurons in the IG/CC communication, as already hypothesized by recent immunohistochemical findings in rat IG (Barbaresi 2018 ). These neurons could be similar to those recently observed in layer III of IG which were positive to calbindin (Bobić Rasonja et al 2021 ; Sanders et al 2021 ), a protein that has a threefold function as buffer, transporter and likely as a non-canonical sensor of Ca 2+ (Schmidt 2012 ).…”

“…A very recent paper in humans (Bobić Rasonja et al 2021 ) found that IG is developmentally distinct from the hippocampal formation; in addition, it exhibits continuous maturation, also in the final trimester of gestation, without signs of regression during the fetal period; this suggests that IG is not a rudimentary tissue, but may play a functional role in the adult brain (Bobić Rasonja et al 2021 ). Moreover, a Golgi (Wyss and Sripanidkulchai 1983 ) and an immunocytochemical study (Barbaresi 2018 ) described the presence of neurons within the rat IG. In accordance with previous studies, Lorenzi et al ( 2019 ) confirmed that human IG contains neurons, and that some of them are immunopositive to neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO).…”

“…Thus, the presence of neurons and of nNOS positive neuronal-like cells in IG suggest that it is not a merely rudimentary tissue, 4 but likely plays a functional role in the adult brain. As evidenced by a recent immunohistochemical paper 5 the rat IG contains neurons expressing neurokinin-1 receptor, sending fibers to the underlying CC and to the cingulate cortex (Cg). Altogether, these observations suggest an intercommunication among IG, CC and Cg, leading to the hypothesis that CC lesioning could provoke functional detrimental effects.…”

“…P50 and p65 are then released and transferred to the nucleus, resulting in the binding to κB sites on nuclear DNA. Hence, inflammatory factors gene transcription is initialized and further causes the overexpression of multiple cytokines that induce neurogenic inflammation (Conti et al, 2019;Ramachandran, 2018) (Barbaresi, 2018;McCleane, 2004;White, Targett, & Harris, 2018). Moreover, five main ingredients (1-dodecanol, elemene, palmitic acid ethyl ester, a-pinene, and 1-pentadecanol) were detected using the GC-MS method, among which 1-dodecanol occupied 13.71% (J. .…”

“…When ENK combines with opioid peptide receptors (DORR), pain signaling transmission is suppressed in the periaqueductal gray (PAG). Meanwhile, antagonistic neuropeptide cholecystokinin (CCK) competes with ENK for DORR, which further underpins central pain sensitization and thus triggers migraine headache (Barbaresi, 2018; McCleane, 2004; White, Targett, & Harris, 2018).…”
