Substances in the mandibular glands mediate queen effects on larval development and colony organization in an annual bumble bee

Maayan Franco,

et al.

Abstract: Social organization is commonly dynamic, with extreme examples in annual social insects, but little is known about the underlying signals and mechanisms. Bumble bee larvae with close contact to a queen do not differentiate into gynes, pupate at an earlier age, and are commonly smaller than siblings that do not contact a queen. We combined detailed observations, proteomics, microRNA transcriptomics, and gland removal surgery to study the regulation of brood development and division of labor in the annual social… Show more

“…odorant-binding protein) (Figure 3). The most abundant protein, a serine-type endopeptidase, constituted 8-19% of all beetle-derived protein on average per sample type, while the rank abundances of other proteins diminished rapidly, consistent with other socially transferred materials 22,23 (Figure 3). Fifty-six proteins could not be classified into these four main groups, including four proteins with orthologues in Drosophila ejaculate, several structural and housekeeping proteins (Hsp70, ribosomal proteins), several with unknown functions, and 13 lineage-specific, novel uncharacterized proteins.…”
