The Neoproterozoic and Palaeozoic Taoudeni basin forms the flat-lying and unmetamorphosed sedimentary cover of the West African Craton. In the western part of this basin, the Char Group and the lower part of the Atar Group make up a 400-m-thick Neoproterozoic siliciclastic succession which rests on the Palaeoproterozoic metamorphic and granitic basement. Five erosional bounding surfaces of regional extent have been identified in this succession. These surfaces separate five stratigraphic units with lithofacies associations ranging from fluvial to coastal and fluvial-, tide-, or wave-dominated shallow marine deposits. Owing to their regional extent and their position within the succession, the erosive bounding surfaces correspond to relative sea-level falls, and accordingly the five stratigraphic units they bound represent allocyclic transgressive-regressive depositional sequences (S 1 -S 5 ). Changes in the nature of the deposits forming the transgressive-regressive cycles reflect landward or seaward shifts of the stacked sequences. These successive relative sea-level changes are related to the reactivation of basement faults and tilting during rifting of the Pan-Afro-Brasiliano supercontinent 1000 m.y. ago. The stromatolite bearing carbonate-shale sequences which form the rest of the Atar Group mark the onset of a quiet period of homogeneous subsidence contemporaneous with the Pan-African I oceanization 800-700 m.y. ago.

Due to difficulties in correlating aeolian deposits with coeval marine facies, sequence stratigraphic interpretations for arid coastal successions are debated and lack a unifying model. The Pennsylvanian record of northern Wyoming, USA, consisting of mixed siliciclastic–carbonate sequences deposited in arid, subtropical conditions, provides an ideal opportunity to study linkages between such environments. Detailed facies models and sequence stratigraphic frameworks were developed for the Ranchester Limestone Member (Amsden Formation) and Tensleep Formation by integrating data from 16 measured sections across the eastern side of the Bighorn Basin with new conodont biostratigraphic data. The basal Ranchester Limestone Member consists of dolomite interbedded with thin shale layers, interpreted to represent alternating deposition in shallow marine (fossiliferous dolomite) and supratidal (cherty dolomite) settings, interspersed with periods of exposure (pedogenically modified dolomites and shales). The upper Ranchester Limestone Member consists of purple shales, siltstones, dolomicrites and bimodally cross‐bedded sandstones in the northern part of the basin, interpreted as deposits of mixed siliciclastic–carbonate tidal flats. The Tensleep Formation is characterized by thick (3 to 15 m) aeolian sandstones interbedded with peritidal heteroliths and marine dolomites, indicating cycles of erg accumulation, preservation and flooding. Marine carbonates are unconformably overlain by peritidal deposits and/or aeolian sandstones interpreted as lowstand systems tract deposits. Marine transgression was often accompanied by the generation of sharp supersurfaces. Lags and peritidal heteroliths were deposited during early stages of transgression. Late transgressive systems tract fossiliferous carbonates overlie supersurfaces. Highstand systems tract deposits are lacking, either due to non‐deposition or post‐depositional erosion. The magnitude of inferred relative sea‐level fluctuations (>19 m), estimated by comparison with analogous modern settings, is similar to estimates from coeval palaeotropical records. This study demonstrates that sequence stratigraphic terminology can be extended to coastal ergs interacting with marine environments, and offers insights into the dynamics of subtropical environments.

The Eocene Monllobat and Castigaleu Formations in the Southern Pyrenees consist of continental and shallow marine deposits respectively. The Monllobat Formation contains conglomerate sheets with sandstone tails, symmetrical channel fills with wings and various types of lobes, accreted laterally in channels as well as by progradation. These deposits are intercalated in large amounts of flat-bedded silt and mudstone with mottling and caliche.The high energy alluvial flow, which deposited these sediments, was initially at right angles to the axis of the elongated basin, becoming near parallel to the axis distally. The deposits are less gravelly distally. Upstream wide, gravelly braidplains were developed. Gravel lobes and muddy sheetfloods prograded over the distal floodplain. Meandering rivers were restricted to a marginal position in the sheetflood environment.The Castigaleu Formation consists of mudstone with intercalations of sandstone. Lobes of conglomerate and sandstone dominate the contact zone with the Monllobat Formation. Flat sandstone layers with tabular cross beds and parallel lamination and massive sandstone beds are distributed throughout the other parts.The lobes were formed at the coastline during high energy inflow in the marine basin. Flow deceleration caused the deposition of the coarsest load at this site, building a wedge with an inclined front during major aggradation and progradation. The other deposition types originated during hyperpycnal inflow in a marine environment. Massive sandstones originated partly because of bioturbation. Reworking by physical marine processes did not occur. Synsedimentary tectonics determined the type of sedimentation at times.
