Subtle findings on fetal brain imaging in CMV infected pregnancies: What is the clinical significance? A retrospective analysis with outcome correlation

Abstract: Objective To describe the prognosis of subtle findings on fetal brain imaging in pregnant women with primary CMV infection during pregnancy. Methods This was a retrospective study. The data included: timing of infection, amniocentesis results, imaging findings, obstetric outcome, and developmental assessment. Results For the 27 included patients, the time of infection was: periconception, first, second, third trimesters or unknown in 14.8%, 29.7%, 40.7%, 7.4%, and 7.4%, respectively. “…11 On the other hand, isolated hyperintense T2 white matter signal on the MRI has been previously described both by us and others to carry good prognosis. 6,8,11 In the current study, we further support this observation, as we show that when HCGM is an isolated brain finding on neurosonography, regardless to the presence of an accompanying LSV, the observation of hyperintense T2 white matter signal on MRI, most probably carry favorable prognosis.…”

“…In our previous publication, we searched part of this database for various subtle brain ultrasound (US) findings, excluding those that comprise the current cohort. 6 The study was approved by the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center's Ethics Board. In Israel, although not obligatory, it is a common practice to screen for CMV serology during the first trimester.…”
