Subunit Composition and Pigmentation of Fucoxanthin−Chlorophyll Proteins in Diatoms:  Evidence for a Subunit Involved in Diadinoxanthin and Diatoxanthin Binding

Abstract: Two different fucoxanthin-chlorophyll protein complexes (FCP) were purified from the centric diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana and characterized with regard to their polypeptide and pigment composition. Whereas the oligomeric FCPb complex is most probably composed of fcp5 gene products, the trimeric FCPa has subunits encoded by fcp1-3 and fcp6/7. The amount of the latter polypeptide is enhanced when FCPa is isolated from algae grown under HL conditions. This increase in Fcp6/7 polypeptides is accompanied by an in… Show more

“…3c and d) [29,30]. In addition, the FCP composition of the antenna varied if the algae were grown under LL or HL conditions [31] . Heterogeneity of FCPs can also be seen in the ultrafast fluorescence decay kinetics [32], which showed that two different pools of FCPs are responsible for the generation of steady-state non-photochemical fluorescence quenching (NPQ) in the diatoms P. tricornutum and C. meneghiniana.…”

“…LHCR proteins constitute the PSI antenna in diatoms (Veith et al, 2009;Lepetit et al, 2010). There are indications that LHCX proteins (except LHCX1/FCP6; Beer et al, 2006;Lepetit et al, 2010) appear to be rather weakly associated with the thylakoid membrane or with the classical light-harvesting complexes (Zhu, 2009; Grouneva Relative LHCX transcription levels with reference to 18S gene expression were normalized to the initial amount. White bars, no chemical treatment; dark gray bars, 1 mM DBMIB was applied 10 min before the light treatment; light gray bars, in addition to DBMIB, 10 mM DCMU was applied 10 min before the light treatment.…”

“…Percentage of each functional category is represented in the total numbers of differentially expressed transcripts from each individual set of data. Martino et al, 2000;Beer et al, 2006;Lepetit et al, 2007;Ikeda et al, 2013). A third group, LHCSR or LHCX, instead consists of antennas involved in photoprotection and stress response in several algae species and mosses (Richard et al, 2000;Peers et al, 2009;Alboresi et al, 2010;Zhu and Green, 2010).…”
