Successful Implementation of Underbalanced Drilling to Maximize Recovery from a Tight Carbonate Reservoir in an Onshore Oil Field, Abu Dhabi, UAE

Abstract: Reservoir screening studies were carried out on all of ADCO’s reservoirs to determine their applicability for Underbalanced Drilling (UBD). These studies resulted in a prioritization of potential UBD candidates. The primary business benefits of UBD were determined as follows: –reduction of formation damage ○Productivity Improvement Factors (PIFs) much greater than 1 were determined in many cases;○potential elimination of complicated (and expensive) stimulation jobs.–dynamic reservoir characterization ○improved… Show more

“…2,3 Nowadays, UBD is commonly achieved with the use of compressible fluids such as air or natural gas (such as nitrogen) as a drilling fluid, or by reducing the oxygen content in air, depending on the specific reservoir condition encountered. 4,5 However, such treatments in which compressible or multiphase fluids are used in wellbores often make UBD challenging and difficult to be conducted. Often times this requires special additional instruments or equipment, and this posts additional works.…”
