Successful Knee Arthroscopy: Techniques

Abstract: Knee arthroscopy is one of the most common arthroscopic procedures required of an orthopedic surgeon. A successful case hinges primarily on adequate pre-operative planning, proper intra-operative setup and thoughtful portal placement. This chapter will discuss in detail the necessary ingredients of a smooth and successful knee arthroscopy case. Advanced techniques to deal with intra-operative difficulties will be presented. Though uncommon, complications arising from knee arthroscopy will be presented and thei… Show more

“…The success of meniscal resection in clinical settings depends on many factors, including visualization of the surgical field [3,8]. Based on this, it can be assumed that reducing the number of meniscus resection cycles and, as a result, the number of meniscus fragments, will have a positive effect on the outcome of the procedure.…”

“…Arthroscopy debridement is a technique where selected structures of the knee are contoured or removed mechanically through small knee portals with modern instrumentation [ 31 ]. The selection of the shaver, velocity, irrigation, suction, and magnitude of the debridement is crucial for the development of an anatomic procedure [ 31 33 ]. The risks may include infection, bleeding, injury, formation of a blood clot, and nerve or blood vessel damage and stiffness [ 31 ].…”
