The main objective of this work is to evaluate the inclusion of nanoparticles to partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide/resorcinol/formaldehyde gel systems to improve the stability under static and dynamic conditions. Oxide nanoparticles (<100 mgÁL −1 ) of SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , MgO, and Cr 2 O 3 were employed and characterized by their physicochemical properties. Gels were prepared and subsequently placed at 70 C for evaluating the nanoparticles influence in gel strength through rheological properties and syneresis measurements. Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles showed the highest potential for the reduction of the syneresis phenomena, followed by MgO and Cr 2 O 3 . The SiO 2 nanoparticles lead to a higher degradation of the gel. As the zeta potential increases, the syneresis of the gel system decreases. The nanoparticles did not significantly affect the storage modulus, describing similar gel strength than the original gel. Extensive laboratory and field tests have shown that the gelation response of gellan gum to saline water makes it a promising candidate for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The objective of this mini-review is to evaluate the applicability of gellan gum in EOR and compare its efficiency to other precursors, in particular, hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM). At first, the “sol-gel” phase transitions of gellan gum in aqueous-salt solutions containing mono- and divalent cations are considered. Then the rheological and mechanical properties of gellan in diluted aqueous solutions and gel state are outlined. The main attention is paid to laboratory core flooding and field pilot tests. The plugging behavior of gellan in laboratory conditions due to “sol-gel” phase transition is discussed in the context of conformance control and water shut-off. Due to its higher strength, gellan gum gel provided ~6 times greater resistance to the flow of brine in a 1 mm-width fracture compared to HPAM gel. The field trials carried out in the injection and production wells of the Kumkol oilfield, situated in Kazakhstan, demonstrated that over 6 and 11 months, there was an incremental oil recovery of 3790 and 5890 tons, respectively. To put it into perspective, using 1 kg of dry gellan resulted in the incremental production of 3.52 m3 (or 22 bbls) of oil. The treatment of the production well with 1 wt.% gellan solution resulted in a considerable decrease in the water cut up to 10–20% without affecting the oil flow rate. The advantages and disadvantages of gellan compared to HPAM are analyzed together with the economic feasibility of gellan over HPAM. The potential for establishing gellan production in Kazakhstan is emphasized. It is anticipated that gellan gum, manufactured through fermentation using glucose–fructose syrup from Zharkent and Burunday corn starch plants, could be expanded in the future for applications in both the food industry and oil recovery.

En la última década se ha avanzado en la implementación de procesos de recobro químico en Colombia, incluyendo pilotos de inyección de geles obturantes para conformance químico, geles de dispersión coloidal, polímeros, álcali y surfactantes. Estos procesos han sido de marcada relevancia tanto para la promesa de incrementar el factor de recobro de los campos colombianos, como para revisar campos en sus planes de abandono mediante la aplicación de nuevas tecnologías. No obstante, estudios experimentales a condiciones de yacimiento han evidenciado que existen limitaciones para la aplicación de estas tecnologías principalmente en lo referente a: calidad del agua de inyección, salinidad del agua de formación, temperatura, entre otras; esto dificulta establecer la viabilidad técnica y/o económica de su implementación en activos con alto potencial de reservas y posibles escenarios de expansión. Por lo anterior y debido a la necesidad de incrementar las reservas de crudo, contribuyendo al entendimiento y desarrollo del recobro mejorado de hidrocarburos en el país, este artículo presenta una revisión de las limitaciones de las tecnologías de recobro químico convencionales, las oportunidades de las nuevas tendencias que permiten superar limitaciones técnicas y operacionales; además, de una estimación del potencial de las tecnologías emergentes evaluadas en el contexto nacional. Para esto, mediante la comparación de las ventanas operacionales de las tecnologías con las propiedades petrofísicas de los campos colombianos, fue posible establecer el potencial de incremento de reservas por efecto de la aplicación de nuevas tecnologías. Adicionalmente, se identificaron las necesidades en el diseño e instalación de nuevas facilidades para el tratamiento, almacenamiento e inyección de los químicos y sus costos asociados; teniendo como premisa que la aplicación de una nueva tecnología de recobro en este caso está condicionada a una viabilidad técnico-económica que permita aprovechar las facilidades existentes en campo optimizando en los posibles CAPEX (del inglés Capital Expenditures) asociados a los proyectos.
