Sudden cardiac death caused by myocarditis in persons aged 1–49 years: a nationwide study of 14 294 deaths in Denmark

Abstract: Myocarditis is associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the young. However, information on nationwide burden of SCD caused by myocarditis (SCD-myocarditis) is sparse. For this study all deaths among persons in Denmark aged 1–35 years in 2000–2009 and 36–49 years in 2007–2009 (27.1 million person-years) were included. Autopsy reports, death certificates, discharge summaries, and nationwide registries were used to identify all cases of SCD-myocarditis. In the 10-year study period, there… Show more

“…It is also a relatively common cause of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in young people (from 6% to 10% in autopsy-based series; Table I in the Data Supplement ). 4 , 5 , 119 121 Furthermore, in some patients, inflammation may cause extensive scarring that triggers left ventricular (LV) remodeling, leading eventually to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) 6 or alternatively to a predominant hypokinetic nondilated phenotype of cardiomyopathy. Myocarditis can be characterized according to etiology, phase, and severity of the disease, predominant symptoms, and pathological findings.…”

“…In acute myocarditis which can be associated with SARS-CoV-2, histology is characterized by lymphomonocytic infiltrate, interstitial oedema, myocytolisys, as observed in myocarditis which is associated with other etiological agents according to Dallas Criteria [ 24 ]. It is cause of sudden cardiac death [ 18 , 25 ], ( Fig. 2 ).…”

“…These include dilated cardiomyopathies, HCM, ARVC, infiltrative diseases (sarcoidosis, amyloidosis), myocarditis, and congenital abnormalities. It is clear that SCD caused by non-ischaemic cardiomyopathies is higher in younger populations (15-30% of SCD in under 35's) [22][23][24].…”
