“…We found that 0.02% of patients developed SSNHL in the 2 months following a herpes zoster attack. While this value is higher than reported by Wu et al (8.85 for males and 7.79 for females per 100 000 people) [1], the data used in their study were only sourced from hospitalization claims. In addition to hospitalization claims data, the present study also included data from ambulatory care visits.…”

“…Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a rather common otologic disorder characterized by newly onset unilateral or bilateral hearing loss that develops rapidly, within 72 h. The estimated incidence rates for SSNHL in Taiwan are 8.85 for males and 7.79 for females per 100 000 people, based on a nationwide population-based study [1]. SSNHL is one of the few emergencies in otology and is also a frightening experience for patients as they lose the function of an organ essential for communication.…”

“…1 It is defined as a hearing loss of at least 30 dB in 3 sequential frequencies in standard pure-tone audiogram occurring over 72 hours. 2 National surveys 3,4 have reported that the incidence of sudden sensorineural hearing loss is between 5 and 30 cases per 100 000 people per year.…”

“…We recruited 416 SSNHL patients and 255 controls from our hospital between October 2010 and July 2014. The diagnostic criteria of SSNHL were sensorineural hearing loss of at least 30 dB in three contiguous frequencies detected using a pure tone audiogram, with an onset within 3 days [2]. Healthy volunteers without a history of hearing loss or any ear disorders were enrolled as controls.…”

“…Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is defined as a loss of at least 30 dB in three contiguous frequencies over 3 days or less [1]. The incidence rates per 100,000 population in Taiwan are 8.85 for men and 7.79 for women [2]. The aetiology and pathogenesis of SSNHL are unknown, but its causes may include viral infection, vascular disease, and autoimmunity [3].…”
