Suicidal Fatality from Azide Ingestion

Abstract: A 35-year-old man ingested an unknown amount of sodium azide and died within 2 h. The postmortem interval was 3 days. No alcohol or drugs were found in the blood and urine. Azide was derivatized in the peripheral blood, urine, and vitreous fluid with propionic anhydride. A portion of the headspace was injected onto a gas chromatograph with a nitrogen-phosphorus detector. Azide was quantitated in the peripheral blood (1.1 μg/mL), urine (7.5 μg/mL), and vitreous (43 μg/mL). The vitreous appears to be a better fl… Show more

“…Azide is metabolized by the liver into nitrogen oxide and azide is eliminated by the kidneys 6 . In urine of case 2, a concentration of 4.7 µg/mL sodium azide (3.0 µg/mL azide) was measured, similar to other reported concentrations of 7.5 26 and 3.7 µg/mL 27 . In most cases, no azide was found in urine.…”

“…Of six cases of suicidal ingestion of NaN 3 , two of the patients were found dead (Table 1(B-2) [2,[61][62][63][64][65]). The remaining four patients were hospitalized, and three died, of whom two were hypotensive and two had metabolic acidosis.…”

“…W ostatnich dekadach ubiegłego wieku zatrucia azydkiem sodu zdarzały się znacznie częściej, pomimo ograniczonego dostępu do tego typu chemikaliów, jakkolwiek w literaturze przedmiotu odnotowano również przypadki zatruć opisane po 2000 r. [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Obecnie lista substancji chemicznych mogących mieć zastosowanie do celów samobójczych jest długa, a łatwy dostęp do informacji i możliwość zakupu przez Internet upraszczają procedurę popytu i podaży.…”

“…Despite limited access to chemicals of this type, sodium azide poisonings occurred much more frequently during the last decades of the 20 th century, however the literature on the subject also includes poisoning cases recorded after 2000 [1][2][3][4][5][6]. At present, the list of chemical substances which might be used for suicidal purposes is long, and easy access to information coupled with the possibility of making a purchase over the Internet streamline the supply and demand procedure.…”
