Introduction: Suicide by abdominal cut wounds and consequent disembowelment is a modality rarely described in the literature, with rates between 1.6% and 3%. The incidence is higher in men. This type of suicide might be so unusual as the abdominal injuries are not supposed to be related to immediate death (compared to the wrists or throat, which involves rapid bleeding, for example). Considering the infrequency of suicides by abdominal self-cutting, in such cases, the main hypothesis is a homicide, especially in those with multiple injuries or occurred in a complex setting. These cases require a detailed autopsy report with the analysis of the injuries and circumstances of death (e.g., farewell note, history of depression, previous suicide attempts, defense injuries, and signs of hesitation) to allow a differential diagnosis between suicide and homicide. This study aims to highlight the characteristics of suicides through self-cut wounding, focusing on those that determine a large abdominal opening and evisceration. Methods: The authors conducted the literature search using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, on PubMed and Scopus databases, using the following keywords: "(suicide) AND (abdominal stab wounds)", "(suicide) AND (abdominal sharp injuries)", "(suicide) AND (abdominal self-stabbing)", "(suicide) AND (abdominal cut wounds)". Results: 7 articles were included in the systematic review, for a total of 11 cases of suicide by abdominal self-cutting. Of these cases, 3 were women and 8 were men. Conclusions: The analysis of the external examination findings versus the crime scene results is essential to clarify if injuries are self-inflicted with suicidal intention. Suicide through a violent act can also be practiced by people who have no history of psychiatric conditions or other risk factors. Therefore, in cases of abdominal cut and evisceration with victims' survival time, the forensic pathologist has to consider that the deceased himself could cause modifications to the crime scene, turning it into a complicated suicide.

Lung cancer is the first cause of death worldwide of oncological patients. Most of them are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and many of them are characterized by different molecular markers that allow the development of personalized treatments. Epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) and anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) are the most frequently tested genes in lung adenocarcinoma and other lung carcinomas with glandular component. The aim of our study is to evaluate the distribution of ALK gene mutation in lung cancer patient from North West part of Romania. We analysed a number of 289 lung biopsies along 18 months. The samples have been incubated with monoclonal ALK antibodies (clone D5F3), according to the manufacturer�s instruction. The interpretation guide provided by manufacturer was used to distinguish the positives vs negative cases. In our study from a total number of 289 lung biopsies, 196 cases were carcinomas. 57.65 % from the total number of lung cancers were adenocarcinomas. A total number of 79 cases have been analysed for ALK gene supra expression. 5.08 % of adenocarcinomas were positive for ALK, but the mean age for this population is higher comparing with the data from other studies.

Ingestion of cheap para-pharmaceuticals (such as disinfectants, deodorizing solutions, etc.) which are designed only for external use is an unfortunate habit encountered in the recent decades in the economically disadvantaged areas of Romania inhabited by poor, uninformed, and sanitary uneducated population. These para-pharmaceutical products are based on different concentrations of ethanol. Occasionally, the manufacturer modifies the product formula, or worse omits on the label that the ethanol was replaced with methanol, resulting in mass poisoning with a large number of casualties. The authors present a case of mass poisoning by methanol that occurred during one month and resulted in 40 cases of methanol intoxication. Only 5 out of the 40 victims survived the intoxication. All the dead victims underwent medico-legal autopsy which revealed only general features, liable to poisoning. The toxicological examination result was positive for methanol in all the cases. All the intoxicated victims were homeless; they were heavy ethanol consumers, especially of the product rubbing alcohol. The male: female ratio was 31:4 and the age range was between 25 and 70 years old, with an average of 50 years. All the victims were hospitalized in deep coma, showing obvious pathological changes specific to chronic ethanol consumption. Conclusions: some alcoholic para-pharmaceutical products manufactured for external use are ingested by chronic ethanol drinkers. When these products contain methanol, they can cause severe intoxication followed by an impressively large number of deaths.
